Cowboys and Aliens is a Winner !

With all the mixed reviews on Cowboys and Aliens, I was not too sure about seeing it. After so many so so movies this summer like, Thor, Green Lantern, Super 8 and Captain America, I was not expecting much. Man, was I wrong! This movie, although not great, is a good summer B-Movie. With its killer cast of Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, those aliens did not stand a chance against Indiana Jones and James Bond.  I pitied them from the beginning.
All joking aside, the movie does a good job of developing a common western theme of a town on the decline with its usual heros and villians with really bad aliens.  I liked everything about the movie-its fluid pace, and how everything all tied together. And when mankind is in trouble, everyone joins forces and fights the bad guys. The world is saved by cowboys, indians, stagecoach robbers and townsfolks in an epic battle at the end. How cool is that! Go see this movie with the family, everyone is sure to like it. But, don't do what I have been doing lately and taking the "Rotten Tomatoes Movie Reviews Meter" as gospel. Too many times those upity critics put a damper on an event that I have been waiting to see for over a year. They could not have been more wrong abou this movie.

Super 8

super_8

When Super 8 was in the early goings, I was thinking that it had the makings of a real classic, a la Steven Spielberg. There was suspense, train crashes, weird unexplainable events with the promise of a great movie in the making. I could see all the ingredients coming together like a mega summer thunderstorm. But, something happened; the clouds lost their energy and what could have been the storm of the century, turned into a light sprinkle. The movie did this and fell flat.
I think the problem with the movie was that it was two movies in one. The first movie was about a group of kids making a super eight movie about zombies, with all the drama of adolescence and a recent family death. It was a movie in itself and could have stood alone as a good movie. But, there were also other things going on; weird disappearances and even stranger events that government agents were trying to cover up. Sometimes the two meshed but more often than not, things went down separate paths and I wondered which movie I was watching.
In the end, I was expecting a great climatic ending like those in ET and other vintage Spielberg greats. I am trying to not put any spoilers in this review, but the ending was just an, oh-well, it looks like everything turned out ok. Some of my friends liked Super 8, and it did have its moments with great action, good acting and the vintage 70’s backdrop. . But the sci-fi angle didn’t get going until the very end and when it did, I felt nothing.
